GCSE Business Studies – Starting in 2016 for Year 9  Business (8132)

In this course, students develop their understanding of Business Studies.  This is part of a three year course. There are six main units of study (listed below) which are examined in two papers in Year 11.   We are currently following the AQA specification.

  2. Influences on businesses
  3. Business Operations
  4. Human Resources
  5. Marketing
  6. Finance

Assessment
The course is assessed with the two written terminal exam papers
Paper 1  Influences of operations and HRM on Business Activity. This paper examines:

  • Business in the real world
  • Influences on Business
  • Business Operations
  • Human Resources

The paper has 90 marks and is worth 50% of the final GCSE mark.  The paper is a written paper and is 1 hour and 45 minutes in duration.
Style of questions: Section A has multiple choice questions and short answer questions worth 20 marks.
• Section B has one case study/data response stimuli with questions worth approximately 34
marks.
• Section C has one case study/data response stimuli with questions worth approximately 36
marks.

Paper 2  Influences of marketing and finance on Business Activity. This paper examines:

  • Business in the real world
  • Influences on Business
  • Marketing
  • Finance

The importance of external influences on business and how businesses change in response to these influences. Specifically students will examine:

  • Technology
  • Ethical and Environmental considerations
  • The economic climate
  • Globalisation
  • Legislation
  • Competitive environment

 Year 10
Spring Term 2a and 2b

Business Operations
Students should understand what business operations involve, their role within the production of goods and the provision of services, and how they influence business activity. Specifically students will examine:

  • Production Process
  • The role of Procurement e.g. JIT, supplier factors and logistics
  • The concept of quality
  • Good customer service

Year 10
Summer Term 3a and 3b

Human Resources
Students should understand the purpose of human resources, its role within business and how it influences business activity.  Specifically students will examine:

  • Organisational structure
  • Recruitment and selection of employees
  • Motivating employees
  • Training

 

Year 10
Autumn Term 1a and 1b

Marketing
Students should understand the purpose of marketing, its role with business and how it influences business activity. Specifically students will examine:

  • Identifying and understanding customer
  • Segmentation
  • The elements of the marketing mix
  • The purpose and methods of market research

Year 11

Finance
Students should understand the purpose of the finance function, its role with business and how it influences business activity. Specifically students will examine:

  • Sources of finance
  • Cash Flow
  • Financial terms and calculations
  • Analysing the financial position

Autumn Term 1a

Operations
Students are introduced to the final topic of unit 1 in which they will understand production methods for manufacturing and service based businesses, customer service, impact of ICT, quality assurance

Autumn Term 1b

Unit 1
Students will recap their learning from the last year and develop their understanding of the external examination.  Students will develop their understanding of revision technique and will concentrate on extending their answers with a particular focus on developing their analysis and evaluative skills.

Spring Term 2a

Growing a business
Students are introduced to this first topic of the unit two exam.  Students will explore the changes in the aims and objectives of the business, changes in stakeholder interests, methods of growth and integration.

Spring Term 2b

Marketing
Understanding the changes to the marketing mix – Price, Product, Promotion and Place.

Summer Term 3a

People
Students will explore how larger businesses recruitment methods differ from a small business.  Students will also explore motivation and appraisal of staff and different organisational structures.

Summer Term 3b

Controlled Assessment Mock
Students are introduced to the controlled assessment.  Lessons will explore the mark scheme and structure of the controlled assessment.   Students will undertake a practice controlled assessment, including undertaking the research and written report.

The changing production methods used by larger businesses, the challenges of ensuring quality in production and benefits and drawbacks of growing production.

Spring Term 2a

Finance
Students will develop their knowledge of finance, exploring the different sources of finance available to larger businesses.  Students will also understand and interrupt the Balance Sheet and the Profit and Loss accounts

Spring Term 2b

Unit 2
Students will recap their learning from the last year and develop their understanding of the external examination.  Students will develop their understanding of revision technique and will concentrate on extending their answers with a particular focus on developing their analysis and evaluative skills
