In 1962, Wal-Mart opened their first store in Rogers, Arkansas. In 1970, Wal-Mart's first distribution center and home office in Bentonville, Ark. open and Wal-Mart went public on the New York Stock Exchange. Just nine years from that, Wal-Mart's annual sales exceeded one billion dollars. In 1988, Wal-Mart super centers opened across the country. In a merely three years from that, Wal-Mart opened their own store in Mexico City, Mexico; making Wal-Mart an international corporation. Not even sixty years has past, and yet, Wal-Mart is over-powering our country.

In the United States, an employee would be grateful if they were to make nine dollars and hour. With the economy in the United States, no person alone could live even lower than comfortable on that pay.
Wal-Mart is destroying our, as Americans, culture and environment. Wal-Mart destroys little shops from our towns, shops that were built by natives and hard-working people. Shops that overcame hardships and reasonable competition are being torn apart one by one in order not to cause too many people filing bankruptcy. Wetlands in America are not being taken care of, as they should. Wetlands are homes and safety nets for many animals. Wal-Mart has destroyed many wetlands in order to build a store in some town people do not even want there.
In a state analysis, the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services found that in 2003, Wal-Mart covered only 52% of total health care premium costs compared to K-Mart which covered 66%, Target which covered 68%, and Sears which covered 80%. Wal-Mart takes advantage of their employees and suckers them into their costly healthcare plans. But, if something happens to an employee, lets say two months after their hire date, they will not be covered by any healthcare plan whatsoever. When people hear the phrase “Wal-Mart”, they think of happy faces and low prices. Consumers think about the quick and reliable service, and the convenience of their many locations. Also, people might think about their friend and family that shop there during the weekends, looking for and finding even the most obscure item in their shelves. With all these conveniences, it makes one wonder why anyone would find something wrong with Wal-Mart. However, as consumers are becoming smarter, they are becoming more informed. People are starting to care about where they shop. They want to make sure that when they buy an item that they are buying from a store that cares about people and the environment around them. However, Wal-Mart’s reputation has become increasingly bad. With accusations on discrimination, environmental violations, and their poor worker treatment, it’s no wonder why it is losing its standing with Americans. Although Wal-Mart offers many benefits to the American public, it is ultimately a store that does harm to society and the environment.
For one, Wal-Mart offers the advantage of low- prices items. Most items that are always low in price are the meat products. “A range of studies have found prices at Wal-Mart are anywhere from 8 to 39 present less than its major competitors” (Aubekerora). Also the food maintains a low cost, and cosmetic are also sold at reasonable prices. Wal-Mart sells excellent named brand cosmetics that most stores resell and try to earn a good penny or two. They also have an excellent vision care in the store. While this is one advantages, Wal-Mart Offers other advantages as well.
In addition, Wal-Mart has quality serves. Most stores don’t have good return policy. Wal-Mart’s excellent return policy motivates people to spend more money. In fact it makes them feel confident that Wal-Mart products are the best and they will reimburse you for if you are not...
